One of the most frequent questions we hear is “Does my indoor cat really need flea prevention?”

You Bet! Believe it or not, many of the cats we see are indoor cats. Fleas are sneaky little creatures that have no problem hitching a ride into your house on your sock or even on another household pet. Once they get in, they settle in on your cat, have a meal and lay eggs. Before you know it, you have a big flea problem. We find that indoor only cats are less likely to be treated with monthly flea preventatives, these cats are even more vulnerable.

Don’t have any other pets? Does your cat ever sit by an open window, even a screened one? Go out on the deck, Visit the basement? Does he ever escape for a few hours or go out on a harness, even for a few minutes? Your cat could pick up just one flea in any of these situations and that’s all it takes to start the infestation ball rolling.

While fleas can certainly be annoying to your cat and other pets, they can lead to more serious problems. Tapeworms, flea allergy dermatitis, and anemia are some of the related conditions fleas can cause. We recommend year-round flea protection for all of your household pets—even your indoor cats. If you cat already has fleas, don’t panic!! We can help you get rid of the infestation and establish a plan to keep them away. There are many safe and effective products that will eradicate flea problems.

Just remember, getting rid of fleas doesn’t happen overnight. It can take three or more months to exterminate them once they have become established in your home. Preventing fleas in the first place with a monthly preventative is much easier on everyone in the household, especially your feline friends.
