Heartworm can be very serious problem for both dogs and cats, especially in mosquito-infested areas.  Heatworm infection can kill or seriously debilitate infected pets because the worms live in the bloodstream, lungs and heart.  A blood test can be performed here at the hospital to determine if your pet has heartworm infection.  A year-round preventive program is most effective and highly recommended to keep your pet free of hearworms.
